Riga Queer Choir
Working with Safe Space through the years has been an amazing experience. With the creation of Riga Queer Choir I had the honor to create a logo identity and document the singing protests.
Logo
A significant creative endeavor was the development of Riga Queer Choir visual identity, particularly the logo. This process was deeply collaborative, aiming to encapsulate the diverse voices and unified purpose of the choir and its allies.
A crucial element of the logo's identity was its
distinctive color palette. Instead of a vibrant, traditional
Pride flag, I opted for a muted Pride flag color palette. This
choice was rich in symbolism, designed to signify the unique and
individual stories of each person within the LGBTQIA+ community,
while simultaneously illustrating their powerful ability to come
together for a shared and common goal. The subtle hues
represented both personal journeys and collective strength,
fostering a sense of unity without diminishing individual
identities.
The icon's creation was inspired by the
very essence of the choir: music and sound. The design process
focused on incorporating visual elements reminiscent of strings,
music lines, or sound waves. These abstract forms were subtly
integrated to vaguely follow the letter "K,"
ultimately forming a unique and memorable shape. This not only
provided a direct link to the choir's name but also
visually represented the harmonic convergence of individual
voices into a powerful collective sound.
For the typography, the Unbounded font, was carefully selected. Its characteristics complemented the overall visual direction, contributing to a modern yet accessible feel that resonated with the project's contemporary and community-driven spirit.
Beyond its vibrant, symbolic color palette, a critical design consideration for the logo was its unwavering legibility and impact in monochrome. It was paramount that the logo retained its distinctiveness and message even when stripped of color, ensuring its versatility across a myriad of applications. This foresight was essential for instances like print materials, certain merchandise, or situations requiring minimalist branding where full color reproduction might not be feasible or desirable. Consequently, significant attention was paid to the icon's unique shape and the clarity of the typography, ensuring that its form, proportions, and visual rhythm were robust enough to communicate effectively in a simple black and white rendition, thereby guaranteeing consistent recognition and clear messaging regardless of the medium.
One of the most rewarding, yet challenging, aspects of this creative process was navigating the input from every member of the choir. While diverse opinions required careful consideration and synthesis, the collaborative nature ultimately enriched the outcome. In the end, the logo transcends a singular design vision; it truly feels like a creation born from all of us, with my role being the meticulous execution and translation of those collective ideas into a cohesive and impactful visual mark.

The "Singing Protest" cycle, a powerful series of public demonstrations, was a significant collaborative undertaking by the informal youth group "HARP," the Riga Queer Choir, and the association "Safe Space." Each event within this cycle was strategically designed with specific objectives to advance LGBTQIA+ rights and visibility within Latvia
The cycle commenced with the "Singing Protest for Marriage Equality" on September 26, 2023. This event was singularly focused on the crucial goal of securing full and comprehensive legal protection for all families, explicitly including same-sex couples. It underscored the community's call for legal recognition that extends beyond the existing partnership regulation, addressing vital aspects like inheritance rights and the rights of children within same-sex households, which were not fully covered by the current framework.

Following this, "With a Song Against Hate" on December 12, 2023, shifted focus to the pervasive issue of hate speech. This protest aimed to draw the urgent attention of Saeima deputies to the damaging consequences of hate speech, particularly when directed at the LGBT+ community, and to highlight the existing gaps in law enforcement regarding such incidents. Through song and shared experiences, the event passionately advocated for a society built on respectful and equal treatment for all its members.

As the cycle progressed into 2024, the "Singing Protest for Transgender Rights" on April 3, 2024, brought a vital spotlight to the specific needs of transgender individuals. Its core objective was to raise public and governmental awareness about the significant lack of legal and social protection for transgender people in Latvia. The protest unequivocally demanded clear, inclusive legal regulations, improved access to healthcare, and a broader societal understanding and acceptance to combat discrimination.

Finally, the cycle culminated with the impactful "Voice and Visibility: Singing Protest" on June 19, 2024. This event served as the grand finale of a dedicated 10-month period of civic activism. Its comprehensive objectives encompassed the three key demands that had been central throughout the cycle: unwavering calls for marriage equality, a more robust and effective fight against hate speech, and the vital strengthening of transgender self-determination rights. The event not only vocalized these demands but also formally presented a detailed report, offering data and recommendations to further these human rights causes.
